In a continuation of our series of moving image work by contemporary Lebanese artists, ‘Cartes Postales: With Love from Beirut’, we’re screening a specially curated programme at the Arts Picturehouse on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November 2009.
Screening programme
Saturday 14 November, 3.00pm
STORIES OF POWER AND RESISTANCE (CFT 15*)
Directors: Various. Lebanon/UK/USA. 1983-2006. 90 mins.
Unique short works that not only reflect on the way historical forces affect the individual but also respond to and intervene in the production of history itself. From Walid Ra’ad’s HOSTAGE about Souheil Bachar’s 10-year-long captivity to Mona Hatoum’s intimate and celebrated MEASURES OF DISTANCE, all engage in stories of power and resistance.
Sunday 15 November, 3.00pm
UP TO THE SOUTH (CFT 15*)
Directors: Jayce Salloum, Walid Ra’ad. Lebanon 1992. 60 mins. English, French and Arabic with English subtitles.
At once challenging and touching, personal and political, Jayce Salloum and Walid Ra’ad’s UP TO THE SOUTH provides a lyrical insight into the minds, hearts, and lived reality of the people of southern Lebanon – and tests the border between art and documentary.
Both screenings will be introduced by Brooke McGowan, University of Cambridge.
* Denotes recommended certificate by the Cambridge Film Trust
